Chinese-French Writers and Critics Discuss Contemporary Literary Works
  With the support of the cultural department of the Embassy of France in China and the French Cultural Exchange Centre, the Chinese-French writers and critics’ meet-the-readers session was launched by the Dongcheng District Library in the afternoon, on June 5th, at the Dongcheng District Association of The Federation of Literary Arts, in order to expand the channels of communication, to facilitate exchanges and to create a lively and direct interactive experience for literary lovers. French contemporary writers Laurent Mauvignier and Muriel Barbery, including renowned local writers, critics and translators such as Han Xiao Hui , Qiu Hua Dong, Yu Zhong Xian, Tian Zhen Ying, Liu Qing Bang, Li Jian Jun , Li Xiao Yan and Wang Shi Yao were involved in the discussion of contemporary literary works.

  Feng Da, the curator of the French Cultural Exchange Centre’s multi-media library thanked the organiser and hoped that through such exchanges and interaction, Chinese writers and readers will have a better understanding of French contemporary literary works, expanding its reader base. Laurent Mauvignier’s 2009 literary work “Des Hommes” was translated into Chinese by Yu Zhong Xian and published in May 2010. Prof. Yu Zhong Xian, professor and tutor of the Graduate School of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, talked about his understanding of “Des Hommes” and discussed with the writer, the difficult parts during the course of its translation.According to renowned contemporary writer and vice-chairman of Dongcheng Writers Association, Qiu Hua Dong, the “Des Hommes” as if completing the work of Albert Camus’s unfinished work, the “Le Premier Homme”, had carried on the style of this work with its narration and writing techniques.

  Muriel Barbery is a renowned, bestselling writer, her works “Une Gourmandise” and “L’ elegance du herisson” were translated into Chinese and had received rave reviews. Literary critic, Li Jian Jun gave a good assessment of “L’ elegance du herisson” as it reflected French classical literary spirit and style. Renowned writer and vice-chairman of the Beijing Writers Association, Liu Qing Bang, through his experiences of personally giving interviews, emphasized the importance of life’s experiences as the source of art and the need for writers to reach deeper into life. Renowned essay writer and chairman of Dongcheng Writers Association, Han Xiao Hui, likened this exchange session to “a great literary banquet”, enriching our awareness and establishing a platform for writers and common residents to understand French contemporary literary works. Enthusiastic readers and French writers were engaged in dialogue over various questions such as the French writers’ impression of Chinese contemporary literary works and the situation pertaining to the release of Chinese works in France.
