Foreign Resident Correspondent in Beijing Covered the Opening Ceremony of the 26th Beijing Ditan Temple Fair

  Temple fairs in Beijing started on February 2nd, Chinese New Year Eve. Information Department of Chinese Foreign Ministry and Foreign Affairs Office of Beijing Municipal Government jointly invited foreign resident correspondents in Beijing to Ditan Temple Fair to report the temple fair and experience the traditional Chinese New Year. Over 50 journalists from 26 overseas media such as Associated Press (AP), Reuters, Agency France Press (AFP), Kyodo News Agency, First National Channel of Russia, Nippon Hoso Kyokai (NHK), Korea Broadcasting System (KBS) and AKSIYON of Turkey came to the temple fair for the spot coverage of the opening ceremony.

  At 9:00 o’clock, the temple fair in Beijing opened with the lion dances from Cangzhou, Hebei province and Fenxi, Shanxi province along with the din of clashing gongs and cymbals at the west gate of the Temple of Earth, announcing the Spring Festival of the Year of Rabbit ready to take off. Foreign correspondents all started to photograph, capturing the vivid pictures of the opening ceremony with great interest.

  Although it just started, Chinese and foreign visitors from every corner of Beijing floated into the temple fairs which were going on in full blast and gathered with lots of stalls. The Temple Fairs were so flourishing.

  Journalists from KBS and AFP interviewed Zhang Jinsong, the spokesman of the organizing office of the temple fair, who introduced the history and characteristics of Ditan Temple Fair. He said that Ditan Temple Fair has always emphasized the local folk characteristics of nationality as well as cultural tastes. This year, in addition to previous characteristic events, many celebrative performances would be in presence in Ditan Temple Fair for visitors to taste the real sense of Chinese New Year in Beijing.

  At the imitation ceremony of Qing Dynasty’s offering sacrifice to the Earth, journalists took great interest in photographing these performances full of Chinese tradition, some foreign media even made live coverage. 

  Journalists interviewed visitors to the temple fair at random, asking them questions such as how to celebrate the Chinese New Year and what to do at the temple fair. When being interviewed by KBS, two little Beijing girls gave their Chinese New Year greetings to Korean TV audiences: “Wish Korean people a Happy Spring Festival!” When reporting, influenced by the joyful environment of Chinese Spring Festival, many foreign journalists were excitedly blended into the happiness of Chinese Carnival just as Chinese people.

  The Spring Festival Temple Fair is an important celebration of traditional Chinese New Year, and a traditional festival custom as well. Visiting the temple fair during the Spring Festival has become an important activity of Chinese people today, which can be regarded as a cultural symbol of Chinese New Year.

  Today, with China’s development and Chinese cultural traditions having caught attention of more countries, Chinese Spring Festival culture attracts attention of peoples all over the world. Organizing resident correspondents of foreign countries in Beijing to report Chinese Spring Festival custom can expose them to the tradition of Chinese people’s happy and auspicious celebration for the Spring Festival, and hope to introduce the unique charm of Chinese Spring Festival to the world through their cameras and reports.
