Four Handicrafts of Huashi Appeared as the New Highlight of Pantaogong Temple Fair

On March 22 afternoon, the sixth Pantapgong Temple Fair ceremoniously opened at the Ming Dynasty City Wall Ruins Park, where "Four Handicrafts of Huashi" were introduced and exhibited together for the first time as the new highlight of it.

Dong Huashi area (East Huashi) was home for many folk handicrafts in the history of Beijing, particularly famous for the silk flower, the velvet bird (flower), the Glass Grape of Family Chang and the Glassware, known as the "Four Handicrafts of Huashi", among which the silk flower, the Glass Grape of Family Chang and Glassware have been enlisted on the national intangible cultural heritages, while the velvet bird (flower) on the list of Beijing Municipal intangible cultural heritages, serving as the representatives of folk arts and crafts of Dong Huashi area or even of Beijing Municipality. The culture of these traditional handicrafts, the reminder of the old days for the "Old Beijingers", knowledge to learn history for young people, makes the intangible cultural heritages accepted by the public, which serves as a new measure for Dongcheng's folk artists to implement the spirit of the Seventh Session of the Sixth Plenary Session of CPC and to advance and enrich the Spirit of Beijing.

Co-hosted by the Folk Arts Association of Dongcheng District and the Community of Dong Huash, the purpose of the exhibit is to promote the distinguishing features of the traditional arts and crafts and to spread regional historical culture. With more than a half year's careful preparation, the artists released many new crafts for the audience to enjoy. The exhibit hall is carefully decorated, with grape trellis entwined with green leaves and vines hanging with clusters of frosty grapes, under which are plumb blossoms welcoming the spring and chrysanthemums in improper season, making it possible for people to appreciate the super techniques of "Flower of Gold" pursuing lifelikeness and freshness; while those lovely velvet birds or chickens and the exquisitely carved glassware seem to be savoring the fragrance and sweetness of the flowers and grapes. Moreover, the velvet flower handicraft "Bring Happiness Back Home", an old Beijing folk art can be found here. The exhibit will be held in combination with Pantaogong Temple Fair, which will last till March 24.
