The Performance of the Twelve Months Directed and Played

On April 16, Twelve Months, a play which was directed and performed by students from primary school, was on show at the China National Theatre for Children. The play won applause for three times in just five minutes after the performance begun.

The Twelve Months, which won the Special Prize for Excellent Dramas of the 5th National Outstanding Children’s Drama Exhibition and Play in 2005, has performed 450 times in a row as the celebration repertoire for the 25th anniversary of the founding of the China National Theatre for Children. However, the cast and director of this good play were now taken on by students from Gexinli Primary School. During the opening ceremony, Principal of the school Zhao Danyang said, “The school rehearsed the Twelve Months for the first time last year. For this time’s rehearsal, we not only used students as the director, but adopted the method that older students and graduates guided younger actors and actresses, and thus the students can learn from practice and experience arts from the rehearsal. ”

Besides the young actors and actresses on the stage, every student in Gexinli Primary School participated in the rehearsal. The school, with the art studio as the medium, added the workshops of arts, instrumental music and dancing in 2017. Currently, students in the school will take one school-based drama class each week. Students in grade-level and school-level theatrical troupes will have one more drama class every week. The school employs graduates from colleges of performing arts as full-time drama teachers. Teachers in the school said, “Drama performance will also be introduced into Math Classes. Students are not all actors or actresses. They can take part in creating script, making clothing and props, etc. based on their interest. Our purpose is to make art permeate to the hearts of every student.”

At present, under the framework of the development outline for school-based textbooks, Charm of Children’s Art, the first set of school-based textbooks with campus drama as the core content, has been written by the school and published and shown on the market by the Chinese People’s Publishing House. This set of textbooks has six books, suitable for students from first grade to sixth grade.
