Located in Nanluoguxiang, not spacious, Wenyu Yogurt Shop exclusively sells imperial dairy products. Before China’s liberation the shop once was “Juhegong”. Having experienced a series of events such as joint state-private ownership, the Culture Revolution, etc., the shop had experienced a downfall and even disappeared for a time. After the Reform and Opening Up, it resumed its operation. Since 2003, it has had three generations of shopkeepers, now the shopkeeper is Tian Wenyu. It is said that their older generation had learnt secret skills from an imperial chef in the early Qing Dynasty, who was in charge of making desserts. Now, they got the know-how to make imperial dairy products. The dairy products by Wenyu Yogurt Shop are made from fresh milk and sugar, in addition with glutinous rice wine.
The Yogurt here is very unique, which can wet your whistle, very soft with fragrance of the glutinous rice wine. It is made in traditional handmade way, definitely natural and green. That is why there is a long queue of people buying Yogurt. Usually the Yogurt has been sold out right after the noon, so come in the early noon time before the most popular flavors are sold out.
What’s more, the shop provides some desserts made from milk which can seldom be seen in south China such as Dan Wang Nailao (Egg and Cheese), Shuang Naijuan (a kind of milk custard), Nailaogan (a kind of Dried Cheese cream). Yogurt is the most popular semi-coagulated dairy product of the Beijing local snacks with a long history. Being praised by poets from many dynasties as delicacies served after wine, yogurt had gradually become an essential imperial dessert in Qing Dynasty’s court.
